Perhaps the most important lesson is that leadership remains an elusive concept for many. The term itself is used in so many ways and in so many different contexts that the concept of "leadership" has become almost meaningless. Since no truly universal definition exists to provide a standard for its use, even the most middling can claim to show some semblance of mere leadership.
Societal Leadership is something quite different. To us, a Societal Leader is someone who operates credibly in each of the four, interdependent attributes of Competence, Character, Conviction, and Courage. The Societal Leader continually acts in the best interest of all in society, not just the narrow interests of a particular group or ideology.
Which party leader is most reflective of being a societal leader?
With several hundred people having visited us in the last week and over 100 respondents taking the Leadership Scorecard survey, you've confirmed that the societal leadership attributes are important (all score an average of 9 or higher out of 10). We'd agree!
We're not surprised that the leading attribute so far is character, both on its own and in terms of its connection to our future Prime Minister or your local member of parliament.
We know it's a challenge to rank them the way we've asked you to do, but that's deliberate: as leaders, we often have to make tough choices between elements that each have their own merits. See the ranked results in Figure 1 (the lower the number, the more important you've told us it is).
